How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

Pray

Have you ever sat down to pray and thought…I want to talk to God, but I don’t even know where to start.

Your mind feels crowded. Your heart feels tired. And the words just won’t come.

If that’s you, let me gently tell you something very important: You are not bad at prayer. You are human. And God understands that.

Prayer is not a performance. It’s a relationship. And sometimes, relationships grow the most in the quiet moments when words are hard.

First, Let’s Clear This Up: There Is No “Wrong” Way to Pray

Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the idea that prayer has to sound a certain way. Polite. Poetic. Perfect.

But Jesus never taught prayer as a speech. He taught it as conversation.

Sometimes prayer is:

  • thanking God

  • asking for help

  • sitting in silence

  • crying

  • whispering one simple sentence

God is not grading your grammar. He is listening to your heart.

Even the Bible Says We Won’t Always Have the Words

This verse is such a comfort:

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness… we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” — Romans 8:26

Did you catch that?

God already knows there will be times when we don’t know what to say. And He doesn’t leave us alone in that space. He meets us there.

Simple Ways to Pray When Words Feel Hard

If prayer feels overwhelming, here are gentle ways to begin:

1. Pray One Honest Sentence

Prayer doesn’t need paragraphs.

Try something simple like:

  • “Lord, I need You.”

  • “God, help me.”

  • “I don’t understand, but I trust You.”

  • “Please give me peace.”

Short prayers can be powerful prayers.

2. Let Scripture Pray for You

When your words run out, borrow God’s.

You can read a Psalm and turn it into prayer, like:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want…” Lord, please guide me today. I need Your care.

Psalms are especially beautiful for this because they include:

  • joy

  • fear

  • anger

  • hope

  • waiting

Every emotion God already knows we carry.

3. Try Breath Prayer

This is one of the gentlest ways to pray when anxiety or overwhelm hits.

As you inhale, pray: “Lord, You are near.” As you exhale, pray: “I receive Your peace.”

Slow breathing calms your body. Prayer steadies your heart.

It doesn’t have to be complicated to be holy.

4. Sit Quietly in God’s Presence

Sometimes prayer isn’t talking. Sometimes it’s simply being with God.

You can say: “Lord, I don’t have words today, but I’m here.” And then sit quietly for a few moments.

God is not uncomfortable with silence. He lives there too.

5. Write Your Prayers Instead of Saying Them

If your thoughts feel tangled, try writing them out. Not pretty. Not organized. Just honest.

God doesn’t need polish. He welcomes truth.

God Cares More About Your Heart Than Your Vocabulary

One of the biggest misunderstandings about prayer is thinking we have to impress God.

But Jesus told us that God is a Father who already knows our needs before we even ask.

Prayer isn’t about informing God. It’s about inviting Him into what we’re carrying.

Even when all you can offer is a sigh…God hears that too. Think about him, and bring him into that moment with you.

What If You Feel Spiritually Distant?

This is such an honest fear, and so many people carry it quietly.

If prayer feels awkward or forced, it doesn’t mean you’re failing at faith.

It may simply mean:

  • you’re tired

  • you’re discouraged

  • you’ve been carrying a lot

God does not pull away when you struggle. He draws closer. Sometimes the bravest prayer is:“God, help me want to pray again.”

And He will.

Prayer Grows With Practice, Not Perfection

Just like any relationship, prayer grows over time. Not because you say everything right…but because you keep showing up.

Some days your prayers will feel strong. Some days they will feel weak.

But God meets you in both. He does not measure your faith by your eloquence. He measures it by your trust.

A Gentle Invitation

If today feels heavy and words are hard, let this be enough:

Just whisper His name. Jesus.

That alone is prayer.

And it is always heard.

XO, Marie

Hi, thanks for stopping by!

Every time I sit down to write a blog post, I picture someone—maybe it’s you—curled up with a blanket and a warm drink, scrolling with hope that something here will speak to your heart, your home, or even just your to-do list.

Honestly, it’s kind of humbling (and amazing!) to think that my little words might make a difference—whether it’s helping you figure out what to cook tonight, giving you a peaceful project for a rainy day, or offering a moment of encouragement when life feels a bit too loud.

I pour my heart into each post hoping it feels like a breath of fresh air. A cozy corner of the internet where you feel understood, uplifted, and maybe even inspired to create something new or just be.

Because really, we’re all just trying to find beauty, calm, and connection in this busy world—and I hope this space helps you do exactly that.

Let the posts
come to you.

Thanks for submitting!
